Accidental Implantation: Prevention

Prior to considering vaccination, a careful history should be taken to rule out susceptibility to complications in the vaccinee or his/her contacts. These include:

Eczema (current or history of)
Diseases with disrupted skin
Burns
Wounds
Inflammatory eye disease

The degree of skin disruption should be taken into account before vaccination is denied. Small areas of involvement accompanied by adequate instruction to the patients and suggested coverage of the area to avoid implantation may be sufficient to permit vaccination.

Instruct patients in the care of the affected areas in order to avoid further transfer to themselves or to others. Please visit the Preventing Contact Transmission page for more detailed information.
